The Green Codex contains a fifty-point package of measures. The city assembly also decided on the Green Capital of Europe application.
At its meeting on Thursday, Debrecen’s general assembly accepted the city’s environmental protection program, the Green Codex, presented at the end of January. The fifty-point package of measures defines a system of tasks and expectations until 2026, which the municipality developed together with the University of Debrecen and the Green Working Group.
The 380-page document, which was also discussed in public consultations, covers all aspects of life, from the Environmental Control System, tree planting, the continuation of the Civaqua programme, carbon-neutral industrial parks to bird-friendly measures.
Debrecen residents could vote on the fifty points on the Dehir.hu website. The voting was accompanied by a huge interest, nearly 60,000 votes were cast in two weeks.
László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen, also proposed that Debrecen should apply for the title of European Green Capital in 2027 (the title should be applied for in 2025), which was also supported by the Board. HUF 120 million has been earmarked for the application in the environmental programme. The European Commission created the European Green Capital Award in 2008 to promote exemplary green and sustainable cities and to encourage other cities to take similar initiatives.
