It is a common practice in Hungary that if a holiday falls on a day close to the weekend, a change of work arrangements is introduced with one or two extra days off (long weekends).

These extra days off are usually redeemed with working Saturdays.

In addition, around the end of the year, there are two shortened days (not public holidays) when most employees are allowed to leave work early, shops tend to close around noon and public transportation switches to holiday schedule around 4pm.

These special days are:

  • 24 December: Christmas Eve
  • 31 December: New Year’s Eve
