Security, development, prosperity: these are the three phrases that Mayor László Papp will use to guide his new term. László Papp recalled in the program Public Affairs Extra (In Hungarian “Közügy Extra”) recorded inside the walls of the renovated Old City Hall, that he started his career as mayor in 2014, and that the past ten years have been about how they can speed up the economic development of Debrecen and strengthen the city’s economy.
“We have laid strong foundations in recent years, and we can build on them for the next five years and decades beyond. Security, progress, prosperity: these three terms should define the years ahead. They are closely linked: security is a key condition for development, whether it is public security, security of livelihoods or security issues related to economic activities. And without development there is no prosperity,” he underlined.
The Mayor pointed out that the city has reached a milestone, beyond which the benefits from the Debrecen economy can be used specifically for the benefit of the locals.
“We have worked to make Debrecen strong and prosperous so that its citizens are strong and prosperous. The aim is to create conditions of prosperity so that people who live here really like to live here,” László Papp pointed out.
He also said that a Mayor must represent the city as a whole.
“When the elections are over, there is no party preference, we are working for Debrecen and all the citizens of Debrecen. I would like to make security, prosperity and development felt not through party politics, but through the fact that we are all Debrecen citizens. In the next five years, we want to make every citizen of Debrecen feel that it is good to live in this city.”
László Papp thanked all the people of Debrecen who took the opportunity to vote on the 9th of June to express their views on the city’s progress.
“Once again, Fidesz-KDNP candidates won in the city’s 23 municipal constituencies, a very strong mandate,” he added.
He also mentioned that they will have plenty of tasks in the coming years as well, since the huge economic power that they have established in the past years must be taken to the top, and the income from it must be returned to the benefit of the city, so significant developments are expected. The Mayor also spoke about urban development being the goal in the coming years.
“Housing is one of the key challenges, we want to make it easier for young people to get a home and start their lives. Planning work has started on the reimagining of the eastern part of the city, with new transport zones, corridors, and new water infrastructure being designed. It is important to ensure that the zoned areas are not second-rate residential areas in Debrecen.”
It was said in the program that the big economy is not only an opportunity but also a great responsibility.
”I attach great importance to sustainability processes. The Environmental Control System is expected to be launched in early 2025. This, together with the Green Codex, will become more effectively integrated into the life of the city. We also strive for new solutions in the field of city management. Culture will play a prominent role in the life of the city, alongside care policy.”
László Papp is confident that the next five years will be a major development phase for the city.
“By 2029, I would like us to be a city where progress and development go hand in hand with respect for tradition. I would like the city to be a champion of sustainability by the end of the term.”
