The station renovation programme has attracted even greater interest than expected. CEO, Zsolt Hegyi, wrote on his social media page that many more people have indicated their development intentions and ideas than were able to prepare their tender documents in compliance with all formal and content-related requirements by the tight deadline.
“But we do not want to give up any development opportunity! Therefore the Ministry of Construction and Transport and the MÁV Group have decided to open a new call for proposals for further development concepts. The previous tender materials will of course be used in the new procedure, as well as the selection of the winning bidders will be made this year, so that the concrete renewal of the stations and railway stations can start next year”, CEO of the MÁV Group said.
As previously reported by Dehir, the Ministry of Construction and Transport and the MÁV Group have launched a tender for the development of several railway stations in Hungary, including the Debrecen Grand Station.
The Minister of Construction and Transport, János Lázár said at the time that the idea was to separate railway operations from commercial functions and make the latter available to private capital. The plan is that MÁV and the company that won the tender would create a joint real estate development company in which MÁV would hold a maximum 25 percent stake.
This would not only renew the Debrecen railway station, but also add new commercial functions, and this part of the property would be given to the investor company and the consortium of MÁV.
In response to a request from Dehir.hu, MÁV PLC said that during the tender process they were expecting applications from investors and real estate developers who would undertake to renew the station building and its surroundings in exchange for the limited use of part of the property for commercial purposes.
“The scheme will thus serve to improve public transport, boost the local economy and develop the local area, while the properties to be developed will remain in public ownership.
“MÁV Group aims to implement developments that best serve the interests of passengers and local residents,” they concluded, adding that the Debrecen railway station is one of the busiest, with nearly 4 million journeys to Debrecen last year.”
