Last week Wizz Air announced the suspension of the Debrecen-Rome flight; the flight was originally due to be suspended on the 6th of October.
Based on the latest information, “The last Wizz Air flight from Debrecen to Rome will depart on Saturday the 26th of October,” Corporate Communications Manager Olivia Harangozó has now said on the inquiry of Dehir.
Tickets purchased for later flights can be refunded in cash or vouchers, but can also be rebooked free of charge for flights departing from Budapest.
As reported before, the airline announced in July that it would move its base aircraft, previously based in Debrecen, to Budapest from the 27th of October, radically reducing the number of flights to Debrecen.
Wizz Air will also be discontinuing two other permanent flights, Istanbul and Eindhoven, in addition to Rome, from autumn.
The Cyprus flight, which has been permanent until now, will be seasonal and will return next year. Of the three seasonal flights currently in operation, only one will remain in 2025, that of Burgas.
As of today, Wizz Air will have only one permanent flight in Debrecen from the end of October, but there will be even more adverse changes to the schedule.
Wizz Air was the first to operate a flight from Debrecen to London, and it has always been its most popular flight. There was also a period when flights were operated six times a week between Debrecen and the British capital.
Currently, there are five flights a week to London, but this will be reduced to three a week from November, with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and the current timetable is for this to continue until autumn 2025.
“The airport continues to be seen as a strategic element in the city’s development. Until Covid came in, growth was dynamic, which transformed many things. The main transport partner, Wizz Air, is also facing serious challenges and has taken decisions that have adversely affected Debrecen, “Mayor László Papp told Debrecen Television’s Public Affairs programme last week.
László Papp added that they are working with the government and the Ministry of National Economy to strengthen traffic, even by attracting new airlines.
“We see the strategic cities and destinations to which Debrecen flights could effectively serve, “ the Mayor said.
“Moreover, freight transport could be a possible option and an important element of successful operation,” he added.
