Education System in Hungary

The Hungarian education system is predominantly state-run. Pre-school education is compulsory for all children between the ages of three and six, and school attendance is mandatory after that until age 16. 

Pre-school education

In Hungary, pre-school education takes place in kindergartens under the supervision of preschool teachers, who are assisted by qualified support staff (carers or nannies).  

Secondary education

In Hungary, secondary education generally lasts four years; most students finish secondary school at 18 or 19.  

  

Primary education

Primary education is provided in 8-form entry schools with a standardised structure, which includes primary education (from grade 1 to grade 4) and lower secondary education (from grade 5 to grade 8). 

Higher education

Higher education institutions include colleges and universities. Universities offer Bachelor’s (3 years) and Master’s degrees (2 years), as well as doctoral programs (3-4 years). 

International Schools

In Debrecen, students can study at the International School of Debrecen (ISD), Hungary’s first IB Continuum school, or at the Deutsche Schule, which offers German curriculum.

International School of Debrecen (ISD)

ISD is HungaryÂīs first IB Continuum school. Students at ISD have the opportunity to experience an IB education at all grade levels and can graduate with the coveted IB Diploma.

German-language curriculum for students in grades 1-4, with native German-speaking teachers.

Adult education programs provide part-time training for adults who have dropped out of secondary education or who want to gain higher qualifications or improve their existing academic achievements.
