The University of Debrecen – which is one of the country’s oldest continuously operating higher education institutions – is one of Hungary’s prominent research universities, which offers the widest range of domestic training with nearly 30,000 students and 1,500 lecturers, 15 faculties, and 25 doctoral schools.
The roots of the city’s higher education date back to the 16th century. they date back to the century. The Reformed College in Debrecen was founded in 1538, which played an important role in Hungarian education and culture for many centuries. This date is also preserved in the symbol of the University of Debrecen, referring to the predecessors and traditions. Built between 1927 and 1933 in an eclectic-neo-baroque style, the impressive main building’s glass-roofed ornamental courtyard is surrounded by a system of arcaded corridors, on the walls of which the names of the most famous professors and students can be read. In front of the building there is a spacious, French-style park, in the fountain of which, according to tradition, all graduating students take a dip. The statues on both sides of the park commemorate the personalities of Debrecen during the Reformation.
