Nestled behind the university’s majestic main building, the Botanical Garden was established in 1928, following the demolition of the original garden that once belonged to the Reformed College. The university generously donated 13.7 hectares of land to create this vibrant sanctuary of biodiversity.
A Garden with Purpose
The first section to be developed was the Herb Garden, designed not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for scientific research and educational use. In 1935, the rock garden was added, and between 1935 and 1940, the rock-bottom lake was carefully constructed and completed.
A Focus on Native Flora
After 1940, the garden shifted its focus to cultivating plant species native to Hungary, preserving and showcasing the country’s botanical heritage.
The Palm House – A Tropical Treasure
The largest greenhouse complex, the Palm House, is home to a stunning collection of tropical and subtropical plants, including exotic spices and fruits such as vanilla, pepper, avocado, banana, and of course, pineapple.
A Living Collection
Today, the garden maintains nearly 8,000 plant species specimens, with around 6,000 available for public viewing, making it a vital center for education, conservation, and relaxation.
