In a tree‑lined residential quarter, the Szabadságtelep Reformed Church stands as a luminous testament to faith, history, and renewal. Consecrated in 1935, this sanctuary was designed by architect Imre Dolhay, embodying the spirit of the reform‑era kertségek—garden‑suburbs—where community lives close to nature, and people build lives out of shared values.
With seating for about 350 people and standing room for another 100, the church provides space not merely for worship but for gathering: services, celebrations, reflection. At its heart is a richly decorated interior, including a beautiful timber‑panelled ceiling with folk motifs, and a grand organ of three manuals and 33 registers, capable of stirring both stillness and song.
In recent years, the church has shown its resilience. After suffering serious damage in an electrical fire in late 2022, the congregation rallied through a wide‑ranging fund‑raising and repair effort. By the end of 2023 the sanctuary had been fully restored—new heating under the pews, renewed roof and façade, freshly painted walls, and restored interior lightness, offering both comfort and beauty.
Today, worship takes place twice every Sunday, along with regular weekday gatherings—bible study sessions, choir practice, and times of fellowship—that knit the community together.
More than its architecture or its history, the Szabadságtelepi Református Church offers welcome. It is a place where the faithful and curious alike can come to experience peace, connection, and belonging. Its doors are open, its story alive, and its spirit inviting: join for worship, for song, for memory, for hope.
