There is a wide range of scholarship opportunities offered for foreigners with an aspiration to study in Hungarian educational institutions.

Scholarships

Bilateral scholarships by the Tempus Public Foundation – a background organisation of the Hungarian Ministry of National Resources – are available to foreign students, researchers and lecturers in higher education institutions or in scientific or art institutions. The Central European Exchange Program for University Studies (CEEPUS) scholarship aims at promoting student and teacher mobility in Central and South-East Europe. Students can spend a study period abroad and teachers can undertake a teaching period at a partner university. These opportunities are designed to strengthen professional and personal relationships among Central European scholars. In Hungary, the Tempus Public Foundation, a background organisation of the Hungarian Ministry of National Resources manages the programme.

The EEA Grants Scholarship programme operates within the framework of EEA Grants that was established in order to reduce economic and social disparities and strengthen bilateral cooperation between Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein (donor countries) and beneficiary countries, such as Hungary. This scholarship gives the possibility to students, teachers and staff to acquire new skills and gain international experience. The Erasmus+ programme is the European Union’s programme for education, training, youth and sport. Erasmus+ is open to all learners and trainees in all the 28 EU Member States, as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Macedonia, Turkey and Serbia that have a pre-accession strategy. Opportunities to study abroad are available to students at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, as well as Doctoral candidates. The University of Debrecen also has a wide network of Erasmus students who have the opportunity to participate in various social, cultural and sport events organised by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Debrecen. Note: Erasmus scholarships for several universities in Hungary are not available at the moment. Instead, students can currently apply for the Pannonia scholarship programme.

The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme is based on bilateral educational cooperation agreements signed between the Ministries responsible for education in the sending countries/territories and Hungary or between institutions. It is provided for students who would like to complete higher educational studies in Hungary. The AFS Intercultural Programs offer the possibility for students to spend time abroad, improve their language skills and immerse themselves in a new culture. Applicants can select from 63 countries around the world where they would like to spend their exchange programme. It is also possible to host AFS students who are moving to your hometown. Education First (EF) offers a wide range of exchange programmes addressing the needs of students and professionals. Studying a language abroad or completing secondary school or higher education in a foreign country are only some of the options included in the EF programmes. Besides focusing on students, EF also runs specialised programmes for governments and companies, as well as people over 25. In addition, the Debrecen Summer School (DSS) is a unique opportunity for those who would like to learn Hungarian as a foreign language and gain knowledge of Hungarian culture. Established in 1927, the DSS has grown to become the biggest Hungarian summer school. Each year more than 1.000 students from 30-40 countries are taught by a team of about 50 experienced instructors who specialize in teaching Hungarian to foreigners.
