Driving licence

If you have a valid driving licence issued by a foreign country, you can only drive in Hungary with this licence until the end of the validity period of the relevant document(s), if it was issued in accordance with EU rules. You may drive in Hungary even if you hold a valid driving licence and a valid international driving permit, even if your licence was not issued in accordance with EU rules.

Renewal of driving licence (replacement of expired/expiring driving licence)

If you do not have a Hungarian driving licence, but a driving licence issued in another EEA country (EU Member States plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), you must do the following:

A driving licence issued in another EEA state can be renewed by exchanging it for a Hungarian driving licence without a driving test, if you have a medical certificate issued by a general practitioner in Hungary and you have your a place of residence in Hungary.

In this case, however, no automatic document can be issued officially and the exchange of a driving licence issued in another EEA State can only be done in person, in which case a paper medical certificate may be required.

If a person holds a driving licence issued by a third country (non-EEA country), the document can be renewed by naturalisation to a Hungarian driving licence (issuing a Hungarian driving licence instead of a foreign driving licence).

In this case, the first step is also a medical examination by a general practitioner in Hungary. In this case, the automatic issuance of the document by an office is also not possible, and the naturalisation of the foreign driving licence can only be done in person, during which a paper medical fitness certificate may be required.

2.Authority responsible for exchanging driving licences

The first issue of a driving licence and the exchange of a driving licence issued by a Hungarian or other EEA state authority can be arranged at the government office of any district (metropolitan district) office.

In contrast to the above, the naturalisation of a driving licence from a third country can only be arranged at the Central Document Office of the Government Office of Budapest.

Car registration

If you move to Hungary from another EU Member State, you must have your vehicle inspected again when registering it in Hungary. The authority responsible for motor vehicle inspections in Hungary is the Road Transport Office of the National Transport Authority (Nemzeti KÃķzlekedÃĐsi HatÃģsÃĄg KÃķzÚti GÃĐpjÃĄrmÅą-kÃķzlekedÃĐsi Hivatala).
