Standing proudly in the heart of Debrecen, the City Hall is a stunning example of Classicist architecture and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. More than just a beautiful building, it holds a deep historical significance.
During the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–1849, the Hall served as the temporary headquarters of the Defense Committee, playing a vital role in Hungary’s fight for freedom. Hidden within its walls, the “chamber of the secret archives” once safeguarded the Holy Crown of Hungary, making it a silent witness to the nation’s most pivotal moments.
Today, this historic edifice is home to the City Assembly and the Mayor’s Office, continuing its legacy as a center of leadership and “cívis” pride.
Visiting Information: While the building is primarily administrative, guided tours may be available during special events or by arrangement.
