The Debrecen Reformed College and Ecclesiastical Museum welcomes visitors into a rich tapestry of history, faith, and scholarship. Housed within an institution that functioned continuously as a venerable educational establishment since 1538, the museum melds centuries of Reformed tradition with heartfelt national memory, offering both locals and travelers a space for reflection and learning.
At its heart lies the monumental Oratory, now a national memorial, where between January and May 1849, the Lower House of the Parliament met and the momentous “Declaration of Independence” was prepared and later publicly proclaimed—making it a cornerstone of Hungarian national heritage.
More than a series of static displays, the museum breathes with life. Its permanent exhibitions include a compelling introduction to the city’s foundational role in Reformed faith; “The School of the Nation,” tracing centuries of educational devotion; and Csokonai’s Memorial Room, celebrating the famed poet. Visitors can then ascend to explore the Oratory, the grand frescoed staircase, the venerable “Great Library,” and the exquisite Church Art Exhibition: “From Cradle to Coffin”—a journey through sacred artistry and life’s milestones.
The museum also hosts dynamic temporary exhibitions, such as “Kölcsey and the Reformed College – Hymn 200”, commemorating 200 years of Hungary’s national anthem with original artifacts; “Debrecen, Guardian City of Hungarian Freedom,” exploring local involvement in the 1848–49 Revolution; and “Koszorús Ferenc, the Rescuer”, honoring a courageous officer who intervened to halt deportations during World War II.
Open daily from 10:00 to 16:00, the museum invites visitors not just to observe—but to embark on a vivid, carefully curated voyage through faith, identity, education, and the enduring spirit of Hungarian resilience
