Diószegi Sámuel Botanical Garden, located on the premises of Kós Károly Secondary School, is a nationally recognized protected natural site in Debrecen, established in 1983. As a unique and scientifically significant living collection, the garden has long contributed—and continues to contribute—to the success and recognition of its school, local community, county, and the country as a whole. Its value lies not only in its rich botanical diversity (including one of Hungary’s richest bamboo collections), but also in its role as a living example of high-quality environmental and educational culture.
Within Hungary, there is no comparable living plant collection owned by a secondary educational institution in terms of richness and scope. The garden’s collection is meticulously documented and scientifically processed to a model standard. Its plants are clearly labeled, allowing visitors to engage in structured and guided learning through a variety of educational methods. Thanks to its valuable woody taxa, the botanical garden holds a distinguished position among Hungary’s botanical gardens.
Beyond the richness of its registered collection, the garden is equally defined by the high level of maintenance and professional management that supports its living heritage. As a botanical garden established alongside a school, it plays an important role not only in gene conservation and scientific research, but also in environmental education and public outreach. It actively contributes to teaching, cultural enrichment, and the broader dissemination of natural sciences.
