The Grand Library of the Debrecen Reformed College stands as a distinguished beacon of scholarship, history, and spiritual heritage in Hungary. As the core component of the Transtibiscan Reformed Church District’s shared cultural institutions—which include the archives and museum—it carries forward centuries of intellectual and theological tradition.
Since its early origins tied to the Debrecen Reformed College, the library has grown into one of the most significant religious and academic collections in the region. With a collection now numbering over half a million items, it encompasses rare manuscripts, codices, early printed editions, and an expansive selection of theological, historical, and cultural works. Among its treasures are 39 medieval codices, 150 early printed works, and over 1,600 volumes from before 1700—some unique in the world.
The Grand Library opens its doors to readers, researchers, and the curious alike. With a valid reader’s card, members may borrow post‑1950 publications, place holds, and request items from its deeper repositories. Its reading rooms and special research facilities allow on‑site consultation of manuscripts, rare printed works, and theological resources—some accessible only by authorized request.
In addition to its library services, it actively engages the public through exhibitions, lectures, and knowledge events—such as participating in Night of Churches tours. It also offers online access to its catalog and supports remote data‑base services for registered patrons.
Nestled at Kálvin tér 16 in Debrecen, the Grand Library invites all who seek insight, wonder, or quiet contemplation among the pages of faith, culture, and history—welcoming every mind and heart to join in its mission of preservation, study, and discovery.
