Hódos Imre Sports Hall is a distinguished arena where sporting excellence, community pride and versatile events all come together. Named after the legendary Olympic wrestler Imre Hódos, the hall is a landmark for local fans, athletes and visitors alike.
Originally opened in 1976, the Sports Hall has been refreshed and modernized through renovations from 2018 to 2020. The upgrades have ensured that it not only preserves its heritage, but also meets contemporary standards for comfort, safety and functionality.
Located just about four kilometres from Debrecen’s city centre, the hall is highly accessible. Public transport reaches close to its doors, and for those driving in, there’s substantial parking—including 80 spots on site and hundreds more in the adjacent Főnix Aréna parking lot.
With its seating capacity of 1,848 for handball matches—and the possibility of accommodating up to 3,000 spectators for concerts or performances when standing areas are in use—Hódos Imre Sports Hall offers an intimate yet energetic setting. It is the proud home venue of the top‑flight handball club Debreceni VSC, cementing its place in the city’s sports culture.
Beyond sport, the hall serves as a multifunctional space—hosting cultural, social and community gatherings, school ceremonies, concerts, and special events. Its location next to Főnix Hall and connection via an underground corridor enhance its role as part of a larger network of event spaces in Debrecen.
In sum, Hódos Imre Sports Hall stands as more than just an arena—it’s a symbol of local heritage and ongoing vibrancy, inviting everyone—fans, families, performers, competitors—to experience its spirited atmosphere.
