The University of Debrecen is one of Hungary’s oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions, continuously operating and evolving for centuries. Today, it offers the widest range of academic programs in the country, with nearly 30,000 students, 1,500 lecturers, 15 faculties, and 25 doctoral schools.

Historical Roots
The university’s origins trace back to the Reformed College of Debrecen, founded in 1538, which played a pivotal role in shaping Hungarian education and culture. This historic date is proudly reflected in the university’s emblem, honoring its rich traditions and academic heritage.

Architectural Splendor
The university’s main building, constructed between 1927 and 1933 in an eclectic-neo-baroque style, is a true architectural gem. Its glass-roofed ornamental courtyard is surrounded by arcaded corridors, where the names of the institution’s most distinguished professors and alumni are inscribed on the walls.

Traditions and Symbolism
In front of the building lies a French-style park, a serene green space where, according to tradition, graduating students take a celebratory dip in the fountain. Flanking the park are statues commemorating key figures of Debrecen’s Reformation era, further connecting the university to its historical and cultural roots.
