Since 1998, Ákos Balázs has been a member of the Assembly of Debrecen as an individual municipal representative of Józsa.

For many years, he was the President of the Józsa Municipal Sub-Government and, for five years, the leader of the Fidesz faction of the Assembly of Debrecen.

As Deputy Mayor since 2019, he has been responsible for managing and coordinating the municipality’s urban management, institution renovation, and environmental protection tasks, as well as the related tasks of building municipal relations and establishing cooperation in urban management.

Under his direct leadership, significant strategies and comprehensive concepts were developed, including the new city management concept and the city’s Smart City Strategy (Sustainable Mobility Plan for Debrecen; SUMP 2.0). He managed the development of the most complex environmental programme in the country, the Debrecen Green Codex, and the strategic basis document of the Environmental Control System, which was developed with scientific expertise.

He is a representative of the 23rd constituency of Debrecen (Józsa).
