László Papp was elected as a municipal councillor in 1998. In 1999, he became deputy leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group, chairman of the environment committee and property committee member. Since 2002, he has held the position of Fidesz parliamentary group leader and chaired the affairs committee.

In 2010, the Debrecen General Assembly appointed him Deputy Mayor, responsible for entrepreneurial affairs and the city’s strategy.

He has been the Mayor of Debrecen since 2014.

He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Debrecen Without Borders Public Foundation and the Debrecen for Hungarian Football Foundation. He is also Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the Association of Cities with County Rights and a member of the Monitoring Committee of the Operational Programme for Regional and Urban Development of the Ministry of National Economy. Furthermore, he is a member of the National Performing Arts Stakeholder Council of the Ministry of Human Resources.

Debrecen’s versatility is demonstrated by its excellence in sport, culture, and science, which citizens and visitors alike experience. The city has seen a lot of building and beautification developments in recent decades, which has also required the support of its residents. However, the work is not finished.

The mayor aims to improve the living conditions of Debrecen’s citizens so that they feel the city offers a better quality of life and security. High-profile investments strengthen the city’s regional role. 

He and his administration are working to further the city’s development together with the citizens of Debrecen. “Working for Debrecen is an honour!” he believes.
