Its steam locomotive has been in operation for almost 100 years.
A birthday family day was organised at the terminus in Hármashegyalja to celebrate the anniversary. The all-day programme included crafts, face painting and interactive activities for families. The 141-year-old Zsuzsi Forest Railway arrived in Hármashegyalja with celebrating families on board. For those who have not had the chance to travel on the train in the past decades, Sunday was a great opportunity to do so.
The birthday of Hungary’s oldest narrow-gauge forest railway was celebrated with a real forest jamboree, with a wide range of activities for visitors.
Children, parents and grandparents were entertained, for example, by the Aqua Mano Party, but the brave ones could also put Bogyó, the cat’s owl, on their shoulders. The birthday cake was no exception.
“In fact, there were many fun moments on the railway during this historical period.
We remember them, in fact – if I may say so – today, the historical past of the small railway is brought to life for the pleasure of all of us,” Hajnalka Fogarasi Makóné, the managing director of Zsuzsi Forest Railway, said.
The past 141 years will also be presented in a photo exhibition with pictures of the 100-year-old Zsuzsi steam locomotive. The first section of the railway was opened on 16th of July 1882 between Debrecen-Fatelep and Nyírmártonfalva.
“In the beginning, the Zsuzsi Forest Railway was a siding, but it has been in operation as an excursion railway since 1977, so for decades, the Zsuzsi means nature, freedom, excursions and family activities for the town,” Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Lajos Barcsa said.
Hundreds of people celebrated the opening of the small railway on Sunday. Visitors were also treated to a demonstration of police dogs and weapons, and a small railway table was on display in the House of Nature.
