Teams of 5th-6th grade students from primary schools participating in the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative’s school programme were able to participate in a playful water festival as part of the event called “Move, Debrecen! Splash with Kazinczy!” at the Kazinczy Ferenc Primary School and Elementary Art School on the 21st of March, 2025.
Teams of 8 students each arrived for the competition from 6 primary schools: Hunyadi János Primary School of Debrecen; Bolyai János Primary School and Elementary Art School of Debrecen; Bocskai István Primary School of Debrecen; Petőfi Sándor Primary School and Elementary Art School of Debrecen; Szent József Kindergarten, Primary School, Grammar School and Dormitory and Kazinczy Ferenc Primary School and Elementary Art School of Debrecen. The children could test their strength and skills in a total of 7 water games.
More than 13,000 primary and secondary school children are screened each year, and the data so far has shown that, for example, due to digitalisation and computer addiction, a sedentary lifestyle is causing problems for many. This is why the school programme was launched as part of the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative, allowing children not certified athletes to exercise and develop their physical skills outside of school hours twice a week. Currently, 40 schools are participating in the programme, regularly getting 1,500 children moving. Based on the ideas of the coordinators active in the school programme, playful, community-building competitions between schools have been organised for these children for some time. The first in the “water genre” was the “Move, Debrecen! Splash with Kazinczy!” event. Incidentally, organising such events and participation are completely voluntary since the principle of the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative, the joint movement, is a source of joy, which also applies in this case. By the way, more than 165 thousand people have participated in the programmes of the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative, which was launched in the fall of 2021.
In connection with the current event, Diána Széles thanked all the coordinators active in the school programme on behalf of the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative and also presented small gifts to the specific organisers: the General Director of the Kazinczy School, László Nádházi, the Deputy General Directors Anikó Vajdaházi, and physical education teachers Csabáné Nagy, Csaba Fehér, Gabriella Mihály, Ferenc Martinovics, and Imre Huszka.
The local government representative of the residential area that includes the Kazinczy school, János Sánta, said, “The swimming pool in the institution was closed for a long time, but it was renovated, and nowadays, very good conditions await the students and visitors. Many people come here to swim; it is usually full. During the public swimming time available for this purpose, 20-30 people usually visit here per hour.”
The host of the event titled “Move, Debrecen! Splash with Kazinczy!”, Kazinczy Ferenc Primary School and Elementary Art School, is maintained by the Debrecen School District Centre, which supports the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative in many areas. At this event, Deputy Director Andrásné Vántus represented the school district centre.
