National holidays

In Hungary, there are various public holidays celebrated throughout the year. On these days most shops and banks are closed and public transportation runs according to a less frequent holiday schedule.

  • New Year’s Day: 1 January
  • Anniversary of the 1848 Revolution: 15 March
  • Good Friday: varies each year
  • Easter Sunday: varies each year
  • Easter Monday: varies each year
  • Labour Day: 1 May
  • Whit Monday: varies each year
  • National Day (Feast of St. Stephen): 20 August
  • Republic Day: 23 October
  • All Saints’ Day: 1 November
  • Christmas Day: 25 December
  • Second Day of Christmas: 26 December

It is a common practice in Hungary that if a holiday falls on a day close to the weekend, a change of work arrangements is introduced with one or two extra days off (long weekends).

These extra days off are usually redeemed after with working the following Saturday.

In addition, around the end of the year, there are two shortened days (not public holidays) when most employees are allowed to leave work early, shops tend to close around noon and public transportation switches to holiday schedule around 4pm.
