Hungary would be one of only three countries in the world where all three German premium car manufacturers have factories.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, Mayor of Debrecen László Papp, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Lajos Barcsa, and CEO of HIPA (Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency) István Joó reviewed the state of the BMW factory project.

They found that “everything is going according to plan and on schedule, so there is nothing to jeopardize the implementation of BMW’s strategy for the electric switchover,” the minister said.

There is nothing to threaten the implementation of BMW’s strategy for the electric transition, Péter Szijjártó wrote on his social media page.

“It is a huge success and recognition for Hungary that BMW is building a factory in Debrecen that will produce completely new electric models, thus contributing to the modernization and greening of the European automotive industry,” Péter Szijjártó wrote in a recent Facebook post. He said that with this investment, Hungary would be one of only three countries in the world where all three German premium car manufacturers have factories.

Along the M35 motorway, motorists can see buildings gradually taking shape. In the case of the Communications Centre, which is the central unit of the plant, the structural shell is currently being erected, and internal engineering and installation work has also started. Internal works also continue at the Training Centre, where the external shell will soon be closed. This building will also host the dual training program with local educational partners starting in September and will see 100 technical apprentices join the Debrecen team. Applications are currently being invited for the BMW Group Factory Debrecen’s dual vocational training program.

The construction of the battery assembly plant (BMW iFACTORY), which will create 500 jobs and was announced in November 2022, is progressing according to plan. This hall will be used to assemble the BMW Group’s sixth-generation battery cells, which will later be incorporated into the floorplan of the cars – the heart of the all-electric NEUE KLASSE models debuting in Debrecen.
