The EUR 1 billion investment will create more than 1,000 new jobs in Debrecen and guarantee that Hungary will be among the world leaders in the era of electric cars, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Debrecen on the occasion of the start of construction.
BMW’s Debrecen plant will be built on 400 hectares in the Northwest Economic Zone, while a supplier industrial park will be built on 100 hectares. In addition, a 258-space truck park is also planned in the industrial park, which will serve all the industrial parks in Debrecen. BMW has recently announced that construction will start soon in Debrecen, with the head office building and the training center being the first to be completed. Production is scheduled to start in 2025, and the plant will employ thousands of people.
Speaking in Debrecen, Péter Szijjártó said that 2021 was the most successful year for the Hungarian economy in the last three decades. Never before had so much investment been made in such a short time and so many people employed; never before had exports been as strong as last year, he said. These outstanding results were achieved when the global economy was still underperforming at its pre-pandemic level, the minister said.
The investment decisions of recent years predict that 2022 will be even more successful than 2021 in economic terms, Szijjártó pointed out. The minister stressed that production and construction would start in many places this year, including Debrecen.
In 2020 and 2021, infrastructure works were carried out on the site, and now the construction of the buildings of the future BMW plant will begin. It will start with the construction of the non-technological buildings, then the production facilities planned so that production can start in 2025.
BMW’s investment will exceed HUF 360 billion, directly create more than 1,000 new jobs, and open a new chapter in Debrecen and Eastern Hungary’s economic life, while giving a new impetus to Hungary’s leading role in the electric transformation of the automotive industry, the minister pointed out.
Mayor of Debrecen László Papp said that the agreement signed in October 2018 between the government, BMW Group and Debrecen redefines the future of Debrecen and Eastern Hungary. Thanks to this partnership, the city has shown one of the most remarkable economic developments in recent years in Hungary and Europe, the mayor said. He added that EUR 3 billion in working capital was invested in Debrecen between 2014 and 2021.
László Papp pointed out that the start of construction of the plant marks the beginning of a new era and that the BMW Group’s decision to build its new European plant here is one of the most significant economic successes in the history of Debrecen.
According to the mayor, the government and Debrecen have delivered on their commitments, and the BMW Group has lately decided to focus on e-mobility and build the automotive industry of the future in Debrecen.
“We can say that we have emerged victorious from the crisis. We can proudly say that one of the world’s most innovative companies and one of Central Europe’s most successful cities are building the future together in a sustainable way”, the mayor stressed.
BMW Group Debrecen Plant Director Hans-Peter Kemser said that with the start of construction of the first buildings, another important phase is about to begin. The factory buildings will start to be built, and the facility will take its future shape.
“I have seen a very positive attitude and commitment to continue our excellent cooperation to build a state-of-the-art BMW Group factory here in Debrecen,” he said.
At the beginning of 2022, Hans-Peter Kemser took over as Director of the BMW Group’s Debrecen plant, and he has already met with the BMW Group’s local team as well as with partners in Debrecen and Hungary. Hans-Peter Kemser has many years of professional experience in car manufacturing and electric mobility. From 2015 to 2021, he was responsible for the BMW Group’s Leipzig plant operations.

A team of professionals based in Debrecen and Munich manages the various human resources, operations, sustainability, finance, and planning activities. As the construction work progresses, new career opportunities will open up. In the current recruitment phase, the focus will be on areas such as plant construction, human resources, facilities management, finance, procurement, and IT.
As the focus is currently on constructing the first buildings, the job offers will be related to the relevant areas of work. Job vacancies related to manufacturing will be advertised at a later stage.
