MKB Bank Plc. is one of the oldest members of the Hungarian banking system, having started its operations in 1950. Its purpose was to participate in international payment transactions, primarily in foreign trade. In the banking reform of 1987, when the two-tier banking system was established, MKB Bank was granted full commercial banking powers, strengthening its traditional banking activities and successfully launching and expanding its new business lines. Budapest Bank was established in 1987 when the two-tier banking system was created as one of the first three Hungarian commercial banks. It operated as Budapest Bank for more than 30 years before being merged into MKB Bank on 31 March 2022.
