Each year, the Investor of the Year gala recognises the most significant investments of the past year. At the awards for 2022, several companies heavily investing in Debrecen were awarded.

In accordance with tradition, the awards of the Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency (HIPA) were handed out again at the “Investor of the Year” gala, where winners were announced in nine categories. The awards were presented by Levente Magyar, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and István Joó, CEO of HIPA.

At the sectoral level, electronics, the vehicle industry and the food industry maintained their dominant position. Electronics attracted 43% of the total investment volume, while the automotive and food industries together account for 37% of all projects and 44% of new jobs.

Another significant result is that in 2022, positive decisions were made on 20 projects, creating around 2,500 jobs in business service centres, IT and R&D, which is an important step in Hungary’s efforts to have as many high-value-added service industry investments as possible. able to implement.

This year for the Strategic Investment of the Year, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) is a global new energy technology market leader. The company’s EUR 7.3 billion project to be implemented in Debrecen is the largest greenfield working capital investment in Hungary, while it is one of the five largest volume foreign working capital investments launched in the European Union in the last decade. 

CATL chose Hungary as the site of its second European factory after its plant in Germany, where it plans to create thousands of jobs. Due to the proximity of the Chinese company’s prominent automotive industry partners, its plant in Debrecen will be able to better satisfy the battery demand of the European market, contribute to the acceleration of e-mobility and the European energy transition, and Hungary’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality.

For the R&D investor of the year, the Continental Group – Continental Automotive Hungary Kft. won.  The group has a significant investment in Debrecen, producing products of Continental’s Transmission and Sensors & Actuators business at a 7,000 sqm facility and exporting to the European market.
