The green transition is the answer to global climate change, and the take-up of electromobility is key to this.
This was the focus of a Hungarian-German economic conference hosted by Debrecen on 4th July 2023. At the event, Mayor of Debrecen László Papp stressed that the city is doing a lot for the green transition and that Debrecen will be one of the centres of electromobility. Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Lajos Barcsa also attended the programme.
Debrecen is now one of the most important bridgeheads of the German economy, and the diverse electromobility sector is a crucial investment driver. This was the focus of the Hungarian-German Business Forum, which covered a wide range of topics from clean transport to cutting-edge industrial technologies and sustainable urban development. At the event, Mayor László Papp stressed that while Debrecen is becoming an industrial centre of electromobility, the city itself is doing a lot for the green transition.
“This issue is also of great importance for Debrecen, as the trend in public transport is increasingly shifting towards electric vehicles. We are preparing a strategy for energy production and solar energy use in this respect,” László Papp said.
At the forum on electromobility, Sven Hannß, Deputy Head of the Economic Section of the German Embassy, stressed that Debrecen is an important location for German companies. As he said: it is a developing city worth investing in.
Debrecen is the best example of a fruitful economic dialogue, where the Hungarian-German dialogue has led to spectacular results, and the region can undoubtedly expect further investments, said the senior German Embassy official.
Besides the presentations, the programme also included panel discussions, one of which was attended by Lajos Barcsa. In the roundtable discussion on “The transformation of the economy – the importance of e-mobility for climate protection”, the deputy mayor spoke about the city’s industrial development challenges, focusing on housing and transport.

Isotoptech, based in Debrecen, and Thermo Fisher Scientific, a German scientific instrumentation company, have signed an agreement to launch joint research and development activities.
