Mayor of Debrecen László Papp reacted to the statement of Katarina Barley, the vice-president of the European Parliament, in which she encouraged German companies to invest in Romania instead of Hungary.
László Papp added that the construction of the BMW Group Plant Debrecen is progressing extremely well.
According to the mayor, the suggestion is particularly harmful because he is convinced that Hungary is an excellent investment location, and it is not up to the politicians to say where the investments should be made, but rather the investors.
“I think this kind of pressure is extremely harmful. Everyone knows how important the building of the BMW factory is for Hungary and Debrecen. It will resize the eastern part of the country and create new opportunities. We are cautious about this development; we are trying to do everything for it so that the investment proceeds smoothly,” he said.
He added that not only the construction of the factory is progressing well, but also the workforce recruitment- At the beginning of the year, they still had one hundred employees; today, this number has increased to five hundred.
In Debrecen, the BMW Group is building a full-fledged car factory with a pressing plant, a vehicle body-building department, a painting workshop, an assembly hall, and a unique battery assembly plant that enables the in-house assembly of the battery cells required for electric cars.
The plant, which covers an area of more than 400 hectares in the northwestern region of Debrecen, is the first unit of the company group that was developed entirely along the iFACTORY concept from the first phase of planning, in the spirit of efficient, environmentally friendly and digitised production.
