The foundation stone of the new catholic primary school in Józsa was laid

The new educational institution of the Diocese of Debrecen-Nyíregyháza is built in Józsa. 

The 16-class Szent György Catholic Primary School will be built with state funding of HUF 2.4 billion. The foundation stone of the institution was laid on Thursday, and it will open its doors to students in the 2025/26 school year.

Construction machinery is already at work on the site in Józsa where the Szent György Catholic Primary School  will be built. The school will have two classes per grade. The school will also have a gym and a chapel. At the school’s groundbreaking ceremony,  Bishop Ferenc Palánki said that two years ago, a Roman Catholic kindergarten opened in the neighbourhood. The new institution is another proof of the power of faith and solidarity.

“When we do our earthly things and duties here, when we do our vocation and live according to our vocation, we are not only building the kingdom of the earth but also the kingdom of God. If we can do this together, helping each other, then we will come closer and closer to completeness,” the bishop stressed.

The diocese also received state support for the HUF 2.4 billion development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén said that church institutions are becoming increasingly popular in the country.

“It is impossible to establish morality at the social level without God. Therefore, the great advantage of church schools is that through the Ten Commandments, they can pass on a system of values that ultimately comes from God and corresponds to the nature of man in every way, the Deputy Prime Minister pointed out.

“Józsa is one of the most dynamically developing areas of Debrecen, which is chosen by more and more families as their home, and therefore any development that takes place here is important”, the Deputy Mayor of Debrecen and the Representative of Józsa Ákos Balázs said in his welcome speech. 

In Józsa, where the population has grown by 2,000 in the last ten years, more than 13,500 people live in this part of the town; the most important task is to provide resources and opportunities for future generations, he said.

Szent György Catholic Primary School is scheduled for completion by the end of May 2025 and will welcome pupils from September.
