Mayor of Debrecen László Papp and Municipal Councillor for the Western part of the city Erzsébet Katona held a press conference on the developments affecting the transport hubs in the western part of the city on the 3rd of October 2023.
Mayor of Debrecen László Papp said in his opening remarks: “In the light of the past months, I can safely say that we are living through a period of renewal of the city’s transport system, as this year has brought particularly large investments in the field of transport development”. He added that the city’s growth is continuous, which is why it will always be the task of the city administration to develop the city’s transport network and transport system in a well thought-out and planned way.
One of the locations is the intersection of Szabó Lőrinc – Csigekert street and the main road 33 Balmazújvárosi Road and Füredi Road. It is one of the busiest road sections in Debrecen.
The mayor said that there had been interventions on this road at several junctions, but ten years ago the north-western economic zone did not exist. It now exists to the extent that it will start operating from 2024 with a trial run by BMW. The businesses that will be located there will generate additional traffic in this part of the city, which is why the Ministry of Construction and Transport has taken the initiative to ensure that the two major interchanges in the area are designed and developed.
Accordingly, in cooperation with the Ministry of Construction and Transport, it was possible to obtain a public tender for the construction of this junction. This is an intervention on a large scale, since the capacity of the junction will be multiplied.
László Papp pointed out that on the Csigekert Street branch there will be separate right turn lanes, separate straight lanes and separate left turn lanes, so instead of the current 1+1 lanes, there will be 4 lanes in total. On both branches of the main road 33, there will be a separate right turn lane, two straight lanes and a separate left turn lane. The current 2×2 lanes will be replaced by a total of 6 lanes per branch to increase capacity.
The mayor said that a major intervention is also underway in Szabó Lőrinc Street, where a large area of asphalt is being paved.
He added that because there are residential buildings close to the junction, a 200-metre service road is being built there, and a 120-metre cycle path is also being built to link into the cycle path system.
László Papp said that, in parallel, another section of the district was also being developed. The asphalting of Domokos Márton Road has already been completed in 2019, with the intention of connecting this section to the city’s northern bypass, the 354 main road, making the decongestion of Böszörményi Road a realistic and achievable goal. The Ministry of Construction and Transport has also recently launched a public procurement procedure for this development.
In connection with the plans, the mayor said that the installation of a bridge structure would provide the city with a separate level junction, an easy and safe alternative.
As regards the timetable, the mayor said that construction work on both junctions is expected to start in spring next year.
Erzsébet Katona, the municipal representative of the district, emphasized that they see this junction as the gateway to the district and they are trying to open this gateway wider and wider for the people living and travelling here. She added that the three-phase rehabilitation of Szabó Lőrinc Street had already been launched in advance, with two phases almost completed, in the hope of a positive decision by the government. The remaining phase, which is the asphalting of the section between 35 and 55 Szabó Lőrinc Street, will be completed.
This will allow motorists and cyclists to move at a good pace and in complete safety, which is extremely important not only for the residents but also for the university industrial park.
