George Gershwin’s Overture to Cuba is the result of a two-week holiday the composer spent in Havana in February 1932 and the hugely successful premiere of the work took place on the 16th of August, 1932 at Lewisohn Stadium in New York.
Richard Strauss’s magnificent symphonic poem The Merry Pranks of Till Eulenspiegel was composed in 1894-95. In this ‘rags-to-riches tale’, the composer depicts the adventures and frolics of a dashing folk hero, Till Eulenspiegel, in almost all the expressive possibilities of late Romanticism.
Gustav Holst’s ‘cosmic’ piece, The Planets, is little known in our country, although it is one of the most popular orchestral works in the composer’s native Britain. In addition to Grieg, Ravel and Richard Strauss, Holst’s style was influenced by Hindu philosophy and English folk music.
