Ady Pódium – this is the name of the theatre hall of the Ady Endre High School. It was renovated for the 40th academic year of the institution with the help of the local government, with almost HUF 30 million, and equipped with state-of-the-art stage technology. The theatre has so far been used for the education of around 120 drama students, but now the Ady Pódium will also be open to the public with productions by theatre graduates.

“We are inaugurating a new public theatre space, which has served Hungarian and Debrecen theatre culture as an educational venue for decades. From now on, however, the public will also be able to enjoy performances here as a real theatre space,” Deputy Mayor István Puskás said.

Over four decades, around 200 Adys students have become professional actors and successful theatre professionals. This is an intellectual capital that needs to be attracted to the Ady Gymnasium and thus to the cultural life of Debrecen,Sándor Dobránszky, the director, stressed.

“Our students can meet directly with their former classmates, gain a lot of experience from the performances, have a professional dialogue. In the evening we will open our podium to the people of Debrecen, so that they can experience how the artists who started out here are now thanking the city for the opportunities it offers them,” he said.

The opening performance on Tuesday evening was given by Péter Kálloy Molnár, one of the first successful actors to graduate from the Ady in the late 1980s.

“This podium was everything for me: the first rehearsals of the drama class, the first love affairs, the first singing together, the first craziness, the first screen test for drama, so there is a lot that connects me to this room. It is much nicer, much more modern, and yet it is the same”, the actor said.

It is planned that 5-6 Ady alumni will perform solo performances every year on the stage of the Ady Gymnasium.
