On the occasion of the World Kidney Day, a thematic walk was organised on the 14th of March 2024 in the Great Forest as part of the Move, Debrecen! Movement.
Mayor László Papp emphasised at the event that Debrecen is a caring city, and the Move, Debrecen! programme series, one of the most popular public programmes in the city, plays a significant role in raising awareness and preventing diseases. “The Szent Anna Street Centre is constantly available for local people with screenings, lectures and topic suggestions to raise awareness of the health challenges and difficulties that affect many people here in Debrecen,” he underlined. As he said, World Kidney Day is celebrated on the second Thursday of March every year.
Vice President for Medicine at the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre Prof. Dr. Mária Papp stressed that a healthy lifestyle is an essential part of our lives, and balanced physical activity clearly contributes to maintaining physical health. She noted that, in addition, maintaining mental health is also a very important task.
Director of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre, Vice President of the Hungarian Nephrology Society Prof. Dr. József Balla drew attention to the fact that more than ten percent of the population has chronic kidney disease, and the identification and screening of patients is extremely important.
Associate Professor of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre, Secretary General of the Hungarian Nephrology Society, and future President of the Society Dr. István Kárpáti said that chronic kidney disease is a widespread disease, but a significant part of the diseases can be prevented. “Twenty to fifty percent of kidneys can die without any symptoms. Seventy percent of them have to die before any symptoms appear,” he said. He said good nutrition, lifestyle changes and screening can help prevent diseases.
Director of the Debrecen Institute of Primary Care and Health Promotion Csaba Papp pointed out that in the past two and a half years of the Move Debrecen! Movement, many presentations have been given to the participants, including about the kidneys.
