The “Industry Day of Debrecen” conference and exhibition was organised by the Faculty of Technology of the University of Debrecen in cooperation with the local government and the local academic committee. The event highlighted the importance of sustainability, as emphasised by László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen.

Speaking at the conference, László Papp said that Debrecen’s recent intensive economic development and comprehensive urban development is based on a well thought-out strategy and sustainability. He said that the development of economic zones is also accompanied by green developments, from solar parks through  grey water technology to green corridors around the city, and the industrial utilisation of geothermal energy is also planned. All this together makes the development of Debrecen sustainable.

“Over the past year, there has been considerable debate about industrial development in Debrecen, and obviously a balance needs to be struck in this regard. The economy should develop in a way that we can meet the parameters of sustainability,” the mayor stressed.

Commenting on the growing importance of the automotive industry in Debrecen, Dean of the Faculty of Technology of the University of Debrecen  Géza Husi said that investments in the sector, which support the faculty’s training, are well placed. A 3,000-square-metre extension to the Faculty of Engineering building complex is due to be completed by May, and an automotive research centre is expected to be set up in the university’s industrial park this year. “You can think of it as having four classrooms, one of which has virtual reality, and four workshops that I think any automotive company would envy,” he pointed out.

Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering Tamás Mankovits gave an overview of the training courses in cooperation with companies, which serve to ensure the supply of specialists for various industrial sectors. “Of course, our most important task is to ensure the supply of mechanical engineers not only for the automotive industry, but also for the mechanical engineering, agricultural, pharmaceutical and food industries,” he said.

The conference was complemented by a trade exhibition in the Hall in the stadium. More than 30 companies presented their job opportunities and industrial innovations to interested young people.
