Applications are now open for the Béla Békessy Sports Scholarship, the Cívis Talentum Scholarship and the Ferenc Kölcsey Scholarship. The City of Debrecen County Municipality supports sportsmen and women, secondary school students and artists in the field of culture who have achieved outstanding international results for a year. The deadline for applications is the 30th of April 2024.
Béla Békessy Sports Scholarship
The General Assembly of the Municipality of Debrecen established the Békessy Béla Sports Scholarship in 2016. The scholarship has covered 2 Olympic cycles so far, helping Debrecen athletes to prepare for and succeed in international competitions.
The sports scholarship is awarded to support an individual or team athlete competing in a Debrecen sports organisation, amateur or professional, adult or senior junior athlete, who has achieved an outstanding result at Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, World Games, World Championships, World Cups or European Championships.
The scholarship can be awarded to a maximum of 9 people per year and is valid for a period of one year.
The amount of the sports scholarship can be a maximum of HUF 250,000 gross per person/month.
A mandatory element of the application is the certification of the specific results by the national professional association.
In 2023, 20 applications were received.
9 persons won the scholarship in the gross amount of HUF 93,000/month/person:

Cívis Talentum scholarship
The aim of the Cívis Talentum scholarship is to contribute to successful participation in international competitions. The scholarship can be awarded to a talented high school student studying in Debrecen who, in addition to his/her school studies, has participated in an international academic competition in the fields of humanities, real life, foreign languages, arts, and IT, or participated in an international study competition in the framework of vocational training, and provides an exemplary and outstanding performance for his/her fellow students.
The Cívis Talentum scholarship is awarded to a maximum of 5 people per year for a period of one year.
The scholarship amount is HUF 50,000 net per person per month.
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of outstanding results in international and national competitions and an outstanding academic average.
In 2023, 8 applications were received, from which 5 candidates were selected,

– Nándor Fiók,
– Petra Oparaugo,
– Levente Marcell Ráthonyi,
– Bendegúz Péter Vámosi received a scholarship.
Ferenc Kölcsey Scholarship
The Kölcsey Ferenc Scholarship may be awarded to a natural or legal person working in the field of cultural life, with the aim of encouraging the creation of valuable works about Debrecen that strengthen the identity of local citizens and their attachment to the city.
The grant may be awarded for the creation of one work per year and may be shared. The date for the public presentation of the work is the 11th of April of the year following the year of the award, which date can be deviated from at the request of the scholarship recipient, based on the decision of the mayor.
The gross amount of the scholarship, including contributions and SZJA (personal income tax) is HUF 2,500,000.
In 2023, 5 applications were received.
Katalin T. Nagy and Károly Keserü were awarded the scholarship for the realisation of their work entitled “My pictures from the last 30 years”.

If electronic submission is not feasible, it can be submitted in person or by post to the Cultural Department of the Mayor’s Office of the City of Debrecen (4026 Debrecen, Kálvin Square 11 – New City Hall).
