Mayor of Debrecen László Papp, Local Government Representative Erzsébet Katona and Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Ákos Balázs visited the area of the Vezér Street reservoir together with the locals, thinking together about its development on the 15th of  April 2024.

“Water is particularly important in the city, as Debrecen did not necessarily have an abundance of surface water, and this was the driving force behind the Civaqua programme,” Mayor László Papp said.

He recalled that the first phase had been  completed in November the previous year, resulting in the creation of the pond on Vezér Street. The mayor said that there is a need to move towards a solution for the design of the environment that reflects the thoughts, needs and ideas of the people who live here. He added that they would like to see a similar environment in other parts of Debrecen. One such designated area is Tócóvölgy, but there are also similar development opportunities in Józsa. He said that they would like to hear the views of the locals on how the area could be revitalised and made more attractive for the people living there. To this end, they asked for suggestions from locals through an online questionnaire. László Papp stressed that the lake should be a place for recreation and relaxation for local residents. They are open to ideas, for which funds have been earmarked in the city budget.

Local government representative Erzsébet Katona said that the  people in the area already refer to the reservoir as a lake, but some have raised the idea of giving the water surface a name. She noted that there had been a lot of suggestions on the internet about what elements the city should implement around the lake. From a cooking area to a picnic park or a fitness park, residents in the area voted on many options.

After the tour, the joint reflection continued at the Innovation Centre of the University of Debrecen, where Chief Gardener of Debrecen András Kuhn held a workshop for interested participants.
