In the new hybrid operating room of the Cardiology and Heart Surgery Clinic, everything from imaging to catheter procedures to open heart surgery can be performed without moving the patients. According to the plans, 4-500 complicated interventions will take place every year.

The most complicated catheter procedures will be performed in the newly delivered, state-of-the-art operating room, such as replacing a heart valve. If necessary, open heart surgery is also performed. With this procedure, they can perform life-saving interventions with greater success and safety.

“We see here the cutting edge of cardiac patient care, of which there is very little in the country and in Europe. Nowadays, a scientific and patient care centre of such renown as the Clinical Centre must have one of these in its arsenal if it wants to be world-class,” Rector of the University of Debrecen Zoltán Szilvássy said.

The current investment is essential for improving the quality of life of both the region and the people of Debrecen, which is why it was supported by the Gróf Tisza István Foundation for the University of Debrecen. According to the chairman of the board of trustees György Kossa, it will also play a key role in education. “It can also be a great support for scientific work and education, as the future generation will encounter a modern technology that is unconventional, and I can safely say that it is unique in Central and Eastern Europe,” he added.

László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen, stressed at the inauguration ceremony that the hybrid operating centre saves lives. He added that the University of Debrecen, with the support of the government and the cooperation of the city, has been able to make significant quality improvements in recent years, and this is expected to continue in the future.

“There are 7,700 health professionals working at the Debrecen Clinical Centre, here at the University of Debrecen, and the knowledge that the people working here represent is complemented by the technology and technological infrastructure that we see around us,” he pointed out.

State Secretary for Health Péter Takács said that an important priority of Hungary’s forthcoming EU Presidency will be the development of a cardiovascular strategy. He also underlined that universities are excellent partners in its implementation. The most important goal is to ensure that Hungarian people have access to the latest technologies, as exemplified by the current operating room, he said, adding that this is another excellent milestone in the cooperation between the government, the city and the model-changing university. He pointed out that the clinical centre has already received HUF 10 billion worth of development.

According to the plans, 4-500 procedures will be performed in this hybrid operating room every year. As a result, for example, the waiting time for an aortic valve catheter can be reduced from more than a year to a few months.
