The Municipality of Debrecen provides summer holiday care for primary school children aged between 6 and 14 living in Debrecen again this year, organised by the Family and Child Welfare Centre of Debrecen.
The childcare takes place between the 1st of July and the 16th of August 2024 at the Vénkerti Primary School and Elementary Art School in Debrecen.
Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Diána Széles, and Head of the Family and Child Welfare Centre of Debrecen Ibolya Aurélia Orosz reported on this year’s childcare at a press conference on the 2nd of July 2024.
As Diána Széles said, “Debrecen is a caring city and the compulsory summer childcare is not seen as an obligation, but as an experience for children, since many families cannot afford to enrol their children in expensive camps, but in these seven weeks the children can enjoy new experiences and the beauty of the summer holidays for free”.
HUF 22 million is provided from the city budget for this purpose. This means that families will only have to pay a fee for the meals provided by the Debrecen Institution Management Centre (Dim), which is the same as during the school year, the Deputy Mayor added.
There are 113 children who are here all the time from the 1st of July to the 16th of August, which means that they can provide full summer care for the children of so many families.
She emphasised that one of the important pillars of the Caring City is to help families during the summer holidays, by organising a programme where parents can take their children, as they are safe, secure and have a good experience. The deputy mayor thanked the teachers, nurses, social specialists, and students performing community service at school who participated in the services provided to the children.
The Family and Child Welfare Centre of Debrecen worked with a total of 25 organisations to put together the programmes, with the Debrecen Charity Board and its partner organisations playing a prominent role.
Head of the Family and Child Welfare Centre of Debrecen Ibolya Aurélia Orosz said that complex programmes were organised that are suitable for children of all ages and with special needs. They have also set up groups for the 30 children with special educational needs, where they use methods that are necessary for their development. They also try to take into account the specificities of each age group, so they organise a football tournament for the older children and a darts football tournament with the help of the Debrecen Charity Board. In addition to the free play activities for children, the day will also include thematic activities. These include craft activities and awareness-raising programmes.
On average, 200 primary school pupils use the service every day during the 36 days of the summer childcare.
Aurélia Ibolya Orosz pointed out that it was no longer possible to apply for this year’s summer childcare, but parents should keep an eye on the summer childcare opportunities and the application deadline the next year. Finally, the head of the institution thanked all the colleagues, teachers and partner organisations who had helped to organise the event.
