Hungarikum Gala Concert

On Saturday, the 20th of July, the audience will hear excerpts from the works of the greatest Hungarian composers in a nearly 80-minute concert.

On 20 July, Coopera’s highly successful Hungarikum Gala Concert, which has become a tradition in Debrecen, will return to the Nagyerdei Open-Air Stage. The nearly 80-minute concert featuring more than 100 stage performers, will evoke cultural values through our musical traditions and promises to be an unforgettable summer experience.

(Hungarikum is a generic term that denotes a value worthy of distinction, worthy of highlighting, which, with its characteristic features, uniqueness, distinctiveness and quality, is the peak achievement of Hungarians.)

The concert will feature excerpts from the works of our greatest Hungarian composers evoking the best-known melodies of Béla Bartók, Ferenc Erkel, Zoltán Kodály and Imre Kálmán, among others. In addition to the greats of musical theatre, such as opera and operetta, the Hungarikum Gala Concert will also pay tribute to folk music and folk dance, as well as classical world hits inspired by Hungarian rich musical motifs, through the Hungarian dances of Johannes Brahms.

The all-night musical journey will feature vocal artists such as Kinga Kriszta, who has many ties to Debrecen, the versatile mezzo-soprano Viktória Mester and Gergely Boncsér, who have both been awarded the Hungarian Silver Cross of Merit, and the Liszt Prize-winning, merited artist Levente Molnár.

The soloists will be accompanied by the Orchestra of the Budapest Philharmonic Society, the first symphony orchestra in Hungary, which is more than 170 years old, conducted by Dániel Somogyi-Tóth. The Budapest Bartók Dance Ensemble and the Orchestra of the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble will also perform.

The director of the concert is Zakariás Zalán, winner of the UNITER award, who the audience of Debrecen may know as the director of last year’s highly successful gala and the Coopera production “A helység kalapácsa” (The Hammer of the Township) presented in the 2023/24 season at the Csokonai National Theater in Debrecen. For one song, the concert will also evoke the new Hungarian comedy opera, which will be scored by Adrián Kovács, a young composer recently awarded the Artisjus Prize. The creative collaborator of the director is Tamás Bori.

The hostess of the evening will be Noémi Morvai, known from Duna Television and M5 programmes, who will not only guide the audience of the Nagyerdei Open-Air Stage through our musical Hungarikums, but also the TV audience, as the recording of the concert will be broadcast on the 20th of August national holiday.
