The details of the action were presented by Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, Diána Széles, private donor Tamás Széles, and representative of DVSC Football Academy Nonprofit Ltd. Zsombor Zilinyi at a press conference on the 13th of August 2024.

With the start of the fundraising campaign, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles handed over donation packages of school supplies to the children of the nine-child Jakab family. She pointed out that schooling and school enrolment put even more strain on families’ budgets at the end of August, especially where the parent is raising the child alone or where there are several children. During this period, Debrecen, as a caring city, usually assists the social support system, which is subject to an income threshold. Diána Széles drew attention to the fact that the usual HUF 11,100 per child for the start of school allowance can be applied for this year, and the application can be submitted to the social department.

The application period is from the 1st of July to the 31st of October in the given year. Applicants can find information about the subsidy on the City’s website or ask for information and the application form at the Social Department’s Customer Service (New City Hall, 11 Kálvin Square, window 6). The form can also be downloaded from www.debrecen.hu.

In addition, the Debrecen Charity Board continues its tradition of helping families in need with donations of school supplies, which are not subject to income limits but are based on where the need is greatest.

The current location shows that all help and donations go to where they are most needed, as the Charity Board always helps the Jakab family, which is raising nine children.

“We would like to ask the people of Debrecen to think of those in need who have difficulties obtaining school supplies for the new school year,” the Deputy Mayor emphasised. She thanked the companies and economic operators who are joining the initiative. She also expressed her special thanks to the Hungarian community in America, which contributed to the activities of the Charity Board.

They would like to provide families with school supplies vouchers, and the amount raised will help them determine exactly how many families they can help start school.

Private donor Tamás Széles is distributing several boxes of clothing to families in need thanks to the efforts of Hungarians living in America. In this context, he stressed that many Hungarians living abroad care about their Hungarian identity, even from a distance of more than 10,000 kilometres. The organisation of MAGTÁR, the Hungarian Cultural Association operating in Los Angeles, collected clothes for children. This will now be given to families in need with the assistance of the Debrecen Charity Board.

Representing the DVSC Football Academy, Zsombor Zilinyi said, “DVSC, as one of the flagship clubs of the city, considers social responsibility to be of utmost importance. Whether it is a blood donation or a food donation, the club tries to support every noble initiative. This is also the case for collecting school supplies, which the whole DVSC family joins. In addition to the adult football team, the academy’s players, professionals, parents and fans are also taking part in this initiative”. He added that the collection will also occur in the Nagyerdei Stadium and the DVSC Shop, where boxes will be placed to receive donations.
