Debrecen athletes participating in the 33rd Olympic Games in Paris were welcomed by the city of Debrecen on the 28th of August 2024.

“There are few cities in Hungary with as many Olympians as Debrecen,” Mayor László Papp emphasised. He said  “sport is an extremely important and decisive institution in the life of Debrecen, in which the university and the sports organisations are the city’s architects,”.

“The city is trying to provide the right infrastructure to ensure that the preparations are ideal and optimal. I am very grateful and thank on behalf of Debrecen for the fantastic performance and work you have done in the past years and decades, and I wish that the next competitions in the calendar will bring you even greater success than you have achieved so far, or that you will fulfil all your dreams in the field of your sport,” he said to the athletes participating in the Olympic Games, adding in addition to the work of coaches and coaching staff, they also owe a debt of gratitude to the sports organisations that help and support the professional development of athletes.

The Managing Director of the Debrecen Sports Centre, András Becsky said “the athletes participating in the Olympics are the flagships of Debrecen sports,”. He noted that they are role models for everyone, not only because of their achievements, but also because of their commitment to live a healthy and sporty life.

The Managing Director of DVSC Handball Ltd. Zsolt Ábrók pointed out that a lot of work and sacrifice was behind the results achieved. Speaking to the Olympians, he wished that their track would be even more beautiful and more successful. He added that he hoped that in four years’ time, their careers in Los Angeles would be fulfilled and that they would be able to participate in the Olympic Games with an even greater number of athletes from the city.

The results of the Debrecen Olympians at the Paris Olympics:

Sugár Katinka Battai finished 6th as a member of the women’s sword team.

Petra Füzi-Tóvizi said goodbye in the quarterfinals as a member of the women’s handball team, which finished sixth.

Petra Senánszky finished 10th in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay and 24th in the 50m freestyle.

Hanga Klekner finished 25th overall in the women’s pole vault.

Luca Kozák finished 28th overall in the women’s 100 hurdles with a time of 12.96, her best of the year.

Gréta Kerekes was 35th overall in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.20.

Gergő Fekete finished fourth as a member of the men’s water polo team.
