Visitors can learn about the history of public transport in Debrecen at an interactive exhibition in the Csapó Street shopping centre.

The exhibition is the first in a series of events marking the 140th anniversary of DKV’s founding. At the Forum, visitors can also try out old ticket validation and the old Bengal tram cab.

The DKV 140 exhibition celebrates the introduction of steam traction trains in Debrecen in 1884 when public transport began. To mark the occasion, part of the DKV Historical Memorial Room has been moved to the Csapó Street shopping centre.

Szabolcs Tóth, CEO of DKV Zrt., said that over 140 years, public transport has gradually become part of the city. Today, nearly 90 million journeys are made in Debrecen.

That is the number of trips made on buses, trams, and trolleys every year, and this figure is expected to grow.

At the exhibition’s opening, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen Lajos Barcsa said that the city’s public transport system has been continuously adapted and developed to meet demand. This process continues today, as public transport is the most sustainable mode of transport in the 21st century. The city administration is committed to making public transport as convenient as possible for passengers.

The deputy mayor stressed that the fleet will be completely renewed by the end of this year, by which time the average age of the buses will be one and a half years.

The interactive exhibition is the first in a series of DKV 140 events. The exhibition can be seen until the 28th of September. On Sunday, 29th of September, DKV Zrt. will host a large-scale open day.
