This year, as in previous years, leaf collection bags are provided for the city’s residents with the cooperation of the elected individual municipal representatives of Debrecen.
More than ten years ago, the Fidesz-KDNP parliamentary group initiated the free distribution of leaf collection bags for the people of Debrecen. Together with the residents, they wanted to make the environment more beautiful and cleaner during the autumn leaf fall.
The initiative’s success continues year after year, and this autumn, more than 165,000 green bags will be provided free of charge for the citizens of Debrecen, within the framework of the waste concession, in close cooperation with the Municipality of Debrecen.
This year, as in previous years, with the cooperation of elected individual municipal representatives, they will personally provide free leaf collection bags for the citizens of Debrecen living in their neighbourhoods at specified times and locations.
Participation in the bag distributions does not require prior online registration.
Please follow the information on the city’s website regarding the locations and times of the distribution. Due to weather and other conditions, distribution dates are subject to change.

In October and November, the public service provider A.K.S.D. Ltd. organises a unique collection service for collecting leaf collection bags by emptying and delivering the separated, selective waste (yellow-lidded waste bins and yellow bags).
It must be placed on the municipal waste collection day in the perimeter streets with no designated selective collection day.
The green bags are to be closed, tied, non-spillable and intended exclusively for collecting green waste (e.g. twigs less than 1 cm in diameter, grass clippings, leaves).
If the green bags contain municipal waste or other non-green waste, the service provider may refuse to collect the waste separately.
The green waste collected separately in this way will be sent to the composting plant of A.K.S.D. Ltd, where it will be used to produce high-quality compost under the Agromass Kombi brand. The composting plant at the Regional Waste Treatment Plant produces more than 12,000 tonnes of compost per year. The innovation has reduced the amount of organic material going to landfills.
The benefits of compost:
- plants can easily take up the nutrients in the humus content of the compost
- improves soil structure, which helps aeration
- the compost’s high water retention capacity improves soil water balance
- increases the biological activity of the soil
- increases the resistance of plants to pathogens and pests
To keep the air in Debrecen cleaner, the city administration asks the public to take advantage of the green bag collection service. Burning garden green waste is prohibited, as it releases many harmful substances into the air. Fallen leaves and other vegetable waste are wet, compacted, and challenging to burn; therefore, they smoke slowly and lack oxygen. In addition, in the open air, in the absence of a fireplace, it is difficult to develop the high temperature necessary for perfect combustion, so combustion usually involves the emission of many harmful substances.
It is even worth composting fallen leaves and green waste at home, using it to make raised beds, or offering it. The Eco-Manager’s Office, which is maintained within the framework of the Municipality’s LIFE HungAiry air protection project, is also happy to advise on composting.
