Our heritage is Debrecen. The Cívis House of the Year award was granted at a scientific conference on the local historical values of the city. This year’s award went to the property at 13 Széchenyi Street.  At the ceremonial handover, it was said that the judges awarded the more than 100-year-old Cívis house because of the building’s cityscape significance.

As a kind of time capsule, this house at 13 Széchenyi Street is a sign of its condition at the time of its construction. That is why the judges decided that it deserved to be named this year’s Cívis House of the Year. The prize, established last year, is awarded to those who have undertaken to restore a building that reflects the city’s architectural tradition and identity.

“Debrecen’s civilian courage is the phenomenon of being able to show its own values, although this has faded in recent decades, but we also set up this award to bring back the need for urban beautification that was present in Debrecen since the 19th century,”  chief architect of Debrecen István Gábor said.

Deputy Mayor István Puskás spoke about the fact that the city is in a very intense period of change. Debrecen is transforming before our eyes. For the community, the importance of the city’s heritage that lives with us has increased.

“The question of our relationship to the past, our roots, our memories or communal remembrance is particularly relevant and topical in the world in general, as well as in Debrecen, and it is obviously interesting for us what this means for us,” Deputy Mayor István Puskás pointed out.

The award was received by the representative of Hajduság Grain Industry Ltd. The experts praised the more than 100 year old Cívis house and emphasised the exemplary integration of the building into the streetscape and the townscape.
