The atmosphere of the old fairs was evoked in Debrecen

More than 70 producers offered their handicraft products at the Nagyerdei Stadium on the weekend.

The event area and fairgrounds were full of vendors and buyers. Magic boxes, ceramics, and artisan food—each producer offered unique products.

The first fair, entitled “Debrecen Sokadalom,” was attended by vendors from the city, the surrounding area, and across the border. The organizers wanted to show how much value is produced by craftsmen and small producers.

According to Péter Pataki, the fair’s organizer, he started working with local farmers’ markets in 2020. He thought it would be great to have a two-day fair in Debrecen where craftsmen and producers could showcase their quality products. Sigismund of Luxembourg granted the town of Debrecen the right to hold fairs in 1405. This centuries-old tradition is carried on by the Debrecen Fair, which was a meeting place in the past.

Deputy mayor István Puskás said we also support producers by consciously buying. He added, “If we help such valuable community members by standing by them, voting for them, and buying their produce, we can help the whole community.”

The event also includes folk children’s games and delicious snacks. On Sunday mornings, visitors could buy handicrafts and antiques at the Debrecen Antiques Fair, right next to it.
