Tamás Varga’s ” Silver ” exhibition summarises his works and most important projects of the past ten years. It can be seen in the Bényi Gallery at the Kölcsey Centre until 21 November 2024.

At the opening ceremony, István Puskás, Deputy Mayor of Bényi, gave a welcome speech and underlined how photography, especially artistic photography, is an integral part of the city’s cultural life.

He spoke about the Debrecen Photography Club, of which Tamás Varga’s work is a part. He referred to the exciting approaches to the images on display in the exhibition.

Tamás Varga is a psychiatrist who works with children. He is also a versatile, creative musician who picks up a guitar or a camera—the latter because he shoots music videos. He also has a great love for photography.

“There are only a few people in Hungary who work regularly and almost exclusively with this wet collodion process, but recently, more and more people have started to show interest in it,” he said, adding that, in a way, it is a return to the roots of uniqueness, and also an opportunity to stand out from the crowd.

He pointed out that black-and-white photography is also a kind of ‘backward step’ in the visual world, as it partly simplifies the scene’s complexity compared to colour photographs. On the other hand, it highlights specific details and content and burns the image more into the retina.

The opening was given by poet János Áfra, who analysed the displayed material almost. He talked in detail about the bold ideas in the pictures, the use of analogue techniques and the humour and playfulness in Tamás Varga’s paintings.

The exhibition can be seen free of charge until 21 November 2024 during the Kölcsey Centre’s opening hours (10 am to 6 pm daily and until 7 pm if there is an event in the building).
