The cultural programme “1100 Years in Europe, 20 Years in the Union”, launched to mark the EU Presidency, will be coming to Debrecen in November. István Puskás, deputy mayor of Debrecen, and László Angyal, director of the Hajdú-Bihar County Directorate of the National Institute of Culture, held a press conference on this occasion at the Csokonai Theatre on the 14th of November 2024.
István Puskás, deputy mayor, said that local, national identity and Europeanism have been stimulating and inspiring each other for centuries. “One of the most important elements of our identity is that for centuries, Debrecen has been the meeting point of Europe and Hungary, where European culture enters Hungarian culture, and with it, the life of the city and radiates out from here to the region,” he added.
He stressed that this programme series aims to show Hungary’s place in European identity, discuss this relationship through art, bring the historical heritage and traditions closer to the people of Debrecen, and present our values of which we all can be proud.
László Angyal, Director of the Hajdú-Bihar County Directorate of the National Institute of Culture, spoke about one of the most important messages of the event, about how much Hungarian national culture has contributed to European culture. The series of programmes aims to symbolise this diversity, this wealth of values. The national programme involves 14 cultural institutions or institutes. They are the service providers that bring to Debrecen productions and services that can appeal to the city’s whole population. On this day, everyone, regardless of age, can find valuable and attractive programme elements. This will provide an opportunity for a direct encounter with the real gems of Hungarian culture and culture, he pointed out. At the press conference, the director highlighted several programme elements.
The National Institute of Culture will wait for families and culture lovers with a gastronomic bus on Dezső Baltazár Square, where they can taste Hungarian sandwiches or plum-filled pastries. The Hungarikum Playhouse will offer exciting games and activities in the lobby of the Kölcsey Centre. The Déri Museum, the Csokonai Theatre, MODEM, Főnix Rendezvényszervező Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft, and the Hungarian National Archives of Hajdú-Bihar County will also participate.
The official opening of the series of events will occur on Friday, 22 November, at 8 p.m. at the Csokonai National Theatre, before the National Dance Theatre’s performance of Liliom.
