A French café atmosphere in one of Debrecen’s iconic buildings, the Jardin confectionery in Rózsa Street is a must for anyone who loves sweets.

“The Jardin has always been more than just a pastry shop; it’s where my passion meets my love for the city and flavours,” owner Erika Májer said at the opening.

“At Jardin, we’re not just offering delicious desserts; we’ve created a place where every guest can feel at home,” she said, recalling that the tiny shop where they used to operate was full of heart and soul, and that’s where it all started. However, in recent years, rising costs for ingredients, energy and wages meant they could no longer operate as they would have liked. Instead of closing down, they decided to expand.

The new Jardin offers not only more space and comfortable seating but also an expanded menu. French desserts will be joined by home-grown classics, simpler café cakes, and pastries and sandwiches made with puff pastry.

János Szakály, an interior designer from Debrecen, designed the new interior. “We are bringing a French café atmosphere to one of Debrecen’s iconic buildings with a subtle, detailed design decorated with handmade works by local craftsmen. Every detail in the Jardin reflects local values, as sourcing ingredients from local sources is as important as sustainability.

The official opening of the patisserie on Thursday afternoon was well attended. Mayor of Debrecen László Papp was present, as well as Edit Erdei, CEO of Cívis Ház Zrt. The mayor said at the event that the gastronomic and professional work here is of great value. He praised the shop’s high quality. He said that the recently beautifully renovated town hall building had been the town’s administrative centre for 500 years and recalled that May marked 200 years since the first stake was driven to build the town hall. After presenting the owner with a vision of how they would like to make this part of the city centre beautiful, he expressed his hope that the future terrace, alongside the current interior, would add to the business’s success.

Erika Májer thanked everyone who helped and supported her and said she has her life’s work in this confectionery. She recalled the beginnings when the Jardin confectionery was opened in a much smaller room on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street. She said how great it was for her when she first visited this beautiful, patinaed room and fell in love with it at first sight. As she said, a lot of work has been done to ensure the patisserie is equipped with the latest machinery. She said she is confident that the space and products fit perfectly.

CEO of Cívis Ház Zrt. Edit Erdei said that the safety and success of their tenants are essential to them. “This is a European-style space that could be anywhere in the world, such as Rome, Paris, or London. This is a high-quality business that we can be proud of, that it is here in the city centre of Debrecen,” she concluded.

The Jardin Confectionery will be open from the 30th of November, 2024.
