The Christmas tree is an indispensable part of the festive atmosphere. In Debrecen, several places have been selling fir trees since the beginning of the month, among which buyers typically find domestic trees. This time, the price has increased for Nordmann and silver fir trees. Most sellers will not receive new goods until Christmas, so it is worth buying fir trees while there is a selection.
There is still a wide selection of pines in one of the Debrecen shops. Customers can choose from spruce, silver and Nordmann pines from Zala County. Based on experience, Nordmann pines are the best-selling, even though they are more expensive and have less fragrance.
The price increase is primarily experienced in Nordmann and Silver Pines. The reason for these is the change in climatic conditions, the rise in transportation costs, and the fungus, which has primarily thinned the silver pine stock. While the price of traditional spruce is available from 2,000 to 5,000 forints, you have to pay between 5,500 and 13,500 forints for a silver pine, while Nordmann is asked for at least 7,500 forints, but specimens several meters high can cost up to 45,000 forints.
For trees over 2 meters high, the price of Nordmann pine has increased 10-15 percent this year because there are fewer of them, and the price of what is less is increasing.
Due to environmental awareness, ground-ball plants are becoming more popular every year. The price of live pine trees ranges between 5 and 10 thousand forints.
It is not only worth buying a real pine tree because of its scent. Contrary to popular belief, an artificial pine tree has a much larger ecological footprint.
“It takes at least 20 years for it to pay off. No one has used an artificial pine tree for 20 years, so I have to say that even if we only consider economic aspects, a live pine tree is always more worthwhile, not to mention that by buying a live pine tree, we support domestic producers,” president of the Hungarian Association of Ornamental Gardeners László Orlóci pointed out.
Based on previous years’ experiences, at the beginning of Advent, there is still a large selection and fewer buyers, while the week before Christmas will be the opposite. However, pine trees have typically already been harvested everywhere, so it is not worth delaying the purchase until much later.
