After Sensirion Hungary Ltd. and Vitesco Technologies Hungary Ltd., the Trans-Tiszántúli Water Management Directorate (TIVIZIG) was the third winner of the Sustainable Debrecen Grand Prize. The award was received by Director Krisztián Csűrös and PR officer Attila Szegi from Mayor László Papp and Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs, who is also responsible for environmental affairs, at the Thursday meeting of the Debrecen General Assembly.
In the summer of 2019, the City Assembly decided to establish the Sustainable Debrecen Award, which aims to protect and improve the built and natural environment of Debrecen and to recognise high-quality, outstanding work by environmentally conscious and sustainable business organisations. In April 2022, the city council also established the Sustainable Debrecen Grand Prize, which is awarded to the community with the highest number of points each year and is presented at a ceremony.
The Trans-Tiszántúli Water Directorate, as the implementer and operator of the Civaqua-Tócó project, as a consortium partner of the National Water Directorate, applied for the Sustainable Debrecen Award, which they received on the 10th of December. According to the justification, by implementing the largest water project of the past 50 years, the directorate contributes to improving the water management situation in the region by increasing the usability of natural water resources and by delivering water from the Eastern Main Canal to the region.
The project also envisaged several nature conservation measures during its implementation: water retention, increasing water resources in the riverbed, water management, and the creation of a water protection buffer strip along Tócó stream. The operation is carried out in compliance with the regulations for the protection of natural values, with regard to the highly protected animal and plant species in the surrounding areas, as well as the protection of areas belonging to the NATURA 2000 network.
In addition to all this, the sustainability approach is applied in their everyday operations. They use the highest certified electronic document management system, and high-consumption light bulbs and fluorescent tubes were replaced with energy-saving LED light sources. The central building underwent partial heating modernisation this summer, during which the heating center was modernised and some of the windows and doors were also replaced. More than 20 percent of the employees at the Debrecen site regularly commute by bicycle or scooter. There are three large bicycle storage rooms in the yard, and they also have a changing room and shower room at their disposal. On the occasion of World Water Day, a drawing competition was also announced for kindergarten and primary school children in the region. Almost 150 works were submitted, of which the jury awarded three prizes in each category and one special prize.
